Once he arrived in Johannesburg, Reinder wanted to focus on settling-in before exploring vocational pursuits. His REA coach helped him to clarify his personal and professional goals, as well as his expectations and concerns about the expat assignment. Although Reinder had worked in IT for the past 20 years, he decided that he wanted to have flexibility and was not interested in pursuing paid employment. He was, however, hoping to find ways to use his skills and possibly provide training on a volunteer basis.

The REA coach recommended two non-profit organizations that might be a good fit for his background and goals, and offered to make introductions. The next step was to develop an appropriate resume that conformed to local standards. Working with Reinder’s most recent resume, the coach translated it into English and rewrote it to be effective in the market. She also provided practical guidance on the interview process and the work culture in Johannesburg. Reinder was very appreciative of the on-going support of his coach and continues to build his network in the volunteer community.
