Heather accompanied her husband of 25 years on his first international assignment. Reluctantly, she left behind her grown children and two dogs, setting out on what she hoped would be a great adventure. Soon after arriving in Shanghai, however, Heather came to the frightening realization that she had made a terrible mistake. Faced with the crowded streets of the city and no ability to read signs or ask for directions, she became terrified of leaving the apartment complex and was unable to carry out even the simple tasks of everyday living.

Because Heather was reluctant to stray too far from home, the REA coach met her at a local teahouse and immediately began work with her on developing a “survival guide” for life in her new location. Over the next few weeks, the REA coach taught Heather basic Chinese words, how to reach out for help in an emergency and how to navigate the city. Recognizing that Heather needed to overcome her feelings of culture shock and isolation, the REA coach made several personal introductions and connected Heather with local expatriate groups and clubs that helped her assimilate into Chinese culture. In a short time, Heather was ready to focus on her own development and learn new skills that would enrich her life upon repatriation. The REA coach recommended language instruction and assisted Heather in locating classes in horticulture, which had always been of interest to her. In time, Heather was navigating the city comfortably and making her new city a home. The coach kept in contact with Heather and continued to support and guide her until she felt completely comfortable. After her coaching services concluded, Heather wrote a note to REA thanking us for the service we provided, telling us that REA’s coach support saved both her life and her marriage.
